ACM International Membership

Saturday, June 25, 2005 at 7:23 PM

Finally! I'm no longer just a member of an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) student chapter (UP ACM). I've become a member of ACM International itself! Several hours ago I received the membership confirmation thru email. You can now send me a message at pykimpo [at] acm [dot] org. You can also view my ACM vcard (virtual business card).

For those immersed in computing and ICT, a membership in ACM maybe just right for you. For the discounted price of $18 (the special rate for economically developing countries), you'll get the following (freely lifted from the ACM site):

Your ACM Student Portal Package Membership...

* Gives you access to over 450 FREE online IT courses, 395 FREE Online IT books and over 35 online IT publications!

* Will help you with your research, papers, discussions, thesis, and schoolwork.

* Can help you choose your career direction, succeed in school, and find the job of your dreams.

* Puts you in touch with a vast network of over 77,000 IT professionals and students.

* Will help keep you up-to-date with the latest news and information in the field.

Here I'll insert the perfunctory sales pitch: What are you waiting for? Join now!

W00t! The benefits seem very geeky, actually, but I'm pretty sure all the papers available will be especially helpful this thesis year. :)

(But this was one thing unsaid at the GA. Harhar.)

Blogger Corsarius @ 6/25/2005 11:11 PM

Geeky, but essential to the computer scientist. And I'll be damned if I don't get my $18 worth of thesis-aid! ;)

Blogger Drakulita @ 6/26/2005 7:36 AM

I've always been tempted to join ACM because the bloggers (i.e. Jill Walker) I read when it comes to blogging theory are affiliated to it.

BUT I don't know anything about computing!

Oh, but I'll be doing a thesis on blogging and authorship (Foucault's Author-function).

BTW, if you happen to come across texts written by Gregory Crane....

Blogger Drakulita @ 6/26/2005 7:50 AM

How long does it take to be a member? I mean do I need to be a member of the local chapter for a number of days before I could join the international one? Or can I join as soon as I become a local member?

Would it be evil if I join even if I have zero (or maybe about 1%) computing knowledge. But I'm interested in computers tooo. Ahahah... *sigh*

(Shuckers ang daming authorship+blogging topics sa lib nyo ehhh! This is ♥!)

Blogger Corsarius @ 6/26/2005 3:21 PM

Join ACM! I really believe its digital library will help you A LOT in your thesis (which, btw, is very very astig; post some updates on your blog about it, ne? ;D).

Also, though most ACM members are dedicated to computing, I think it wouldn't hurt to join if you're a non-CS person. Especially if you're very interested in the field. The papers in the digital lib range from the technical to the basic, so no prob. Also, free IT courses! (I think. Di ko pa nasusubukan e.) :D

You don't have to be a member of a local chapter. It's actually recommended to be an ACM Int'l member first before joining a local chapter (such as UP ACM). Examples are our faculty members, who were ACM members before the inception of UP ACM.

And yep, I'll tag you when I see any paper authored by Gregory Cane! :)

Blogger ia @ 6/27/2005 11:08 PM

Well, usually Chapters are created to promote ACM International, but since they're organizations too, they look out for their own. :)

But where in heaven's name did you get the idea that you do not know anything about computing, eh? You want to be a CompSci student more than someone else in here. And then some.

Daan ka lang sa Dept. Patulong tayo kay Kuya Harvee. :)

Blogger Corsarius @ 6/28/2005 2:27 PM

Uh huh. I think I'm the one Ia's referring to.

Anyway, yep, just drop by the Department and we'll fast-track your application, if you do decide to join :)

Sige, tignan ko.

Yep puwede kitang tulungan :) Sali na Ms. Quel. Di ka magsisisi :P

Blogger Corsarius @ 6/30/2005 4:48 PM

Good luck na lang po, Quel :) Basta. If you have the money, it'll be worth it. At andyan naman si Kuya Harv e, hehe.

Blogger ibswa @ 7/01/2005 6:49 PM

Basta bilisan mo mag-decide, bumababa ang value ng peso :(
